Your Eyes Give you Something Special

One of the greatest of our five senses is sight. Your eyes are a fundamental organ that brings the world around you into literal perspective and metaphorical wonder. You experience color and shape. You watch not only movies and television, but the lives of your loved ones around you. It’s a distressing misfortune when you begin to lose sight of the planet around you, and you miss out on what the world still has to offer you, which is why it is important that you make sure you eyes are in top health. There are unfortunate ailments that can hinder you vision such as glaucoma, cataracts, and the incurable macular degeneration. Making appointments regularly for eye exams can help you spot these issues in their beginning stages and get the treatment you need to prevent or slow down the coming effects. In fact, our Lasik doctors in St. Louis can do their best to examine your eyes, and detect any illnesses that may currently be affecting your eyes.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the corrosion of the cells that make up the macula, the very center of your retina. The cause of this disease usually results from aging, environment, or can be hereditary and is virtually irreversible. Smoking doubles the risk of obtaining AMD.  As this degeneration takes place, your vision becomes blurry and indistinct. If this disease continues to affect the eye, you could be stuck without the ability to see forward of your peripheral vision. There are two types of Macular Degeneration: Dry, which is the thinning of the macula also called atrophy, and Wet, which is when a blood vessel grows behind the retina and leaks, causing the cells to stop functioning due to tissue scarring. In its early stages, one does not experience a particular lack of sight. In the intermediate stage some vision loss is apparent or beginning. You might start to see straight lines become a bit wavy and colors begin to seem paler. In the Late stages of AMD vision loss is very evident and you might begin to see a cloud of grey in the center of your eye. Though there is no medicinal treatment to aid in AMD, there are life choices you can make to slow down the progression or even reduce the risk of attributing this disease such as dieting, exercising, avoiding smoking and keeping eyes from intense amounts of sunlight

Schedule Regular Checkups

Our sight is very important. It lets us experience and understand life through a miraculous rendering of sensory we couldn’t begin to explain to others who wouldn’t know otherwise. That’s why it is absolutely crucial that you keep up with regular checkups. Taking the time, every so often, out of your day to complete a simple eye exam can help you to make sure your vision is in healthy shape. Also, if you are in the early stages of Macular Degeneration an exam is the only way to find out and it will give you a good start to keep your sight as long as you can.
